11 Biggest Plagiarism Scandals of All Time

The New York Times’ Jonathan Martin broke a story Wednesday accusing Sen. John Walsh of Montana of plagiarizing chunks of his 2007 thesis for the United States Army War College. At least a quarter of the paper was taken from other sources, according to the Times’ analysis. Walsh, a Democrat appointed to the Senate in February running for reelection against Republican Steven Daines, is not the first prominent plagiarism scandal to hit national news. Walsh joins the ranks of at least 11 others — from Vice President Joe Biden to a Pulitzer Prize winner to Russian president Vladimir Putin. The vice president was forced to withdraw from the 1988 presidential race over allegations of plagiarism. Many parts of Biden’s speeches on the trail, as Maureen Dowd of the New York Times reported, were lifted from the unsuccessful run of British politician Neil Kinnock of the Labor Party against Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Revelations followed that Biden took parts of his speeches from Robert Kennedy, JFK and Hubert Humphrey.
