The Peace Prize is to be awarded to individuals and institutions that “have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses,” according to Alfred Nobel’s will. The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarding scientists, writers, peace and political activists since the late 1800s, but not everyone always agrees on who is and isn’t worthy of the $1.2 million prize.
