Eleven oil and gas giants in the U.S. leak so much of a potent green house gas into the atmosphere every year that the emissions would be the equivalent of running seven coal-fired power plants for a year. That's according to a new study released on Monday from the non-profit group Center for American Progress. The group looked at the amount of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, emitted by over two hundred oil and gas companies in 2014. Insidermonkey experts made a list of top 5 methane polluters in the world.
There are both natural and human sources of methane emissions. The main natural sources include wetlands, termites and the oceans. Natural sources create 36% of methane emissions. Human sources include landfills and livestock farming. But the most important source being the production, transportation and use of fossil fuels. Human-related sources create the majority of methane emissions, accounting for 64% of the total. You can also read our article on 11 worst countries for air pollution.
