Oysa bir insanın uzun dönemde birikimini iyi yöneterek kazanabileceği tutar hayatı boyunca kazanacağı maaşların bir kaç katı olabilir. Yatırım enstrümanları arasında borsa’da işlem gören hisse senetleri uzun vadeli kazançları ile diğer bir çok yatırım aracını geride bırakmaktadır. Özellikle günümüzde gerek vadeli mevduat ve hazine tahvili faizlerinin enflasyon seviyesine düşmesi gerekse altın gibi diğer enstrümanlardaki ciddi hareketler borsayı daha da cazip hale getirmektedir. Borsa yatırımcıları sadece Türkiye’de değil yurt dışında da yatırım yapabilmektedir. Bu da onlar için zengin bir çeşitlilik imkanı yaratmaktadır. Borsanın uzun vadedeki enflasyondan arındırılmış yıllık getirisi Amerika ve Türkiyede yaklaşık 9% oranında gerçekleşmektedir.

Borsada oyuncular iki sınıfa ayrılmaktadır. Bu sınıflar yatırımcı ve spekülatörlerdir. Yatırımcılar bir hisse alırken o şirketin iş yapış şekline, kar marjına, borçluluk oranına, gelecekteki potansiyeline vb. somut verilere bakmaktadırlar. Spekülatörler ise kısa vadeli hareketlerden faydalanmaya çalışırlar. Özellikle küçük yatırımcı grubundaki spekülatörler aracı kurumların aldığı komisyon giderleri nedeniyle uzun vadede paralarının büyük bir bölümünü kaybederler.

Borsa yatırımcıları Türkiyede İşbankası, Akbank, Garanti, Tüpraş, Koç Holding, Sabancı Holding, Enka İnşaat ve Alarko gibi çok uzun yıllardır faaliyette olan ve sürekli kar eden şirketlere çeşitlendirme yaparak yatırım yapabileceği gibi Amerikan borsasına da açılabilirler. Amerika’da Türkiyenin aksine Serbest Yatırım Fonları (Hedge Funds) oldukca gelişmiştir. Bu fonlar yatırım dünyasındaki en başarılı yatırımcılar tarafından yönetilmektedirler. Ekonomiturk sitesinin sahibi olan İnan Doğan’da bu fonları kullanarak özel bir model geliştirdi. Geliştirdiği model son iki buçuk yılda 125% getiri sağlayarak aynı dönemde 53% getiri sağlamış SP500 endeksine önemli bir fark attı.
